The request leaves your server but never receives a response before the 5‑second limit expires. WordPress aborts the call and reports a timeout error. The failure originates outside the core code, often from network restrictions or slow remote services.
When the server cannot complete the outbound connection, WordPress marks the request as failed and logs the cURL error. The error appears in admin notices, Site Health checks, and plugin update attempts.
