Elementor failed to retrieve site settings

The Elementor editor tries to load a JSON file that contains your global colors, typography, and layout options. The request runs through AJAX or the REST API. If the request cannot finish, Elementor shows a toast that says the site settings could not be retrieved.

Typical reasons include a blocked AJAX call, insufficient PHP memory, mismatched plugin versions, or corrupted data stored in the WordPress options table. Server security rules or SSL mismatches also stop the request from reaching WordPress.

When the request fails, the Site Settings panel stays on a spinner or appears blank. Other Elementor panels keep working because they do not depend on the same endpoint.

Symptoms

[dashicons-warning]
Spinner never stops
The Site Settings modal shows a loading spinner indefinitely.
[dashicons-no]
Error toast appears
A red notification reads “Elementor failed to retrieve site settings”.
[dashicons-admin-tools]
Console 403/500 response
Browser developer tools show a failed request to admin-ajax.php or wp-json.

Common Causes

JavaScript conflict
Another plugin or the active theme blocks the AJAX request.
Low PHP memory
The server stops the request before Elementor can generate the settings JSON.
Version mismatch
Out‑of‑date Elementor or Elementor Pro cannot read the new REST endpoint.
Corrupted Elementor options
Invalid JSON stored in wp_options prevents proper parsing.
Server security rule
ModSecurity or firewall blocks admin‑ajax.php or wp‑json requests.
SSL or URL mismatch
Site URL uses HTTP while the request forces HTTPS, causing rejection.
