Wordfence scan failed: Unable to open socket to noc1.wordfence.com

Wordfence initiates an outbound HTTPS request to noc1.wordfence.com to start a scan. The plugin must open a socket on port 443. When the server blocks the request, the socket fails and the scan stops.

Typical reasons include firewall rules that deny outbound traffic, DNS resolution problems, IP blocks on the Wordfence side, or outdated cURL/OpenSSL settings that prevent a secure handshake.

Symptoms

[dashicons-warning]
Scan stops early
The scan page shows a failure message and no results are generated.
[dashicons-admin-site]
Live Traffic log error
Entries contain cURL error 7 and a note about unable to open socket.
[dashicons-admin-network]
License activation fails
Wordfence license or update attempts report a connection error.

Common Causes

Outbound firewall block
Server firewall denies outbound traffic on ports 80 or 443 to noc1.wordfence.com.
IP block on Wordfence side
The server IP appears on Wordfence deny list, causing the request to be rejected.
cURL or OpenSSL mis‑configuration
Missing CA bundle or outdated TLS version prevents a secure handshake.
DNS resolution failure
The server cannot resolve noc1.wordfence.com, so the socket never opens.
